چکیده

A variable camber morphing rotor blade with curvilinear fiber composite skin is studied in this paper. The benefits of curvilinear fiber (CVF) composites for morphing skin over the linear fiber are investigated, initially. The skin of a morphing blade is modeled as a plate supported between the D-spar and trailing edge of typical rotor blade dimensions. The CVF composite shows about 60 % increase in the in-plane to out-ofplane bending deformation ratio compared to composites with linear fiber paths. In the second step, a previously developed biologically inspired variable camber internal structure is investigated for variable camber rotor blade. A fluid-structure interaction simulation is performed to obtain the aerodynamic loads acting on the skins of the variable camber internal structure proto type model. The upper skin of this prototype is modeled and optimized to find the optimal curvilinear fiber paths. The ply angles between the stringers are optimized to minimize the strain energy required to deform the skin for camber change and minimize the maximum out-of-plane deflection. The optimal results show that the plies which are away from neutral axis play a significant role in minimizing the out-of-plane deflections. The plies near to the neutral axis play a considerable role in minimizing the strain energy. Further, the skin requires the stiff plies near the D-spar and a flexible plies near the trailing edge tip as the pressure load decreases from the quarter chord to trailing edge portion of the airfoil. The numerical results show that the CVF composite skins can decouple the in-plane and out-plane requirements of morphing skins. The CVF composite skins show considerable reduction in the actuation energy while simultaneously minimizing the skin out-of-plane deformation requirements. 1 Post Doctoral Research Assistant; Corresponding author; E-mail: [email protected]; Address: College of Engineering, Swansea University, Swansea, UK;

Helicopter Blade Stability Analysis Using Aeroelastic Frequency Response Functions

In the present paper, the aeroelastic stability of helicopter rotor blade is determined using Aeroelastic Frequency Response Function. The conventional methods of aeroelastic stability usually use an iterative procedure while the present method does not require such approach. Aeroelastic Frequency Response Functions are obtained by inverting dynamic stiffness matrix of the aeroelastic system. S...

A Qualitative Study Of The Effect Of Fatigue Damage Growth On Helicopter Rotor Blade Modal Parameters

Structural damage in materials evolves over time due to growth of fatigue cracks in homogenous materials and a complicated process of matrix cracking, delamination, fiber breakage and fiber matrix debonding in composite materials. In this study, a finite element model of the helicopter rotor blade is used to analyze the effect of damage growth on the modal frequencies. Phenomenological models o...

Helicopter Rotor Airloads Prediction Using CFD and Flight Test Measurement in Hover Flight

An implicit unsteady upwind solver including a mesh motion approach was applied to simulate a helicopter including body, main rotor and tail rotor in hover flight. The discretization was based on a second order finite volume approach with fluxes given by the Roeand#39;s scheme. Discretization of Geometric Conservation Laws (GCL) was devised in such a way that the three-dimensional flows on arbi...

Helicopter rotor blade injury: a persistent safety hazard in the U.S. Army.

Rotor blade injuries are an inherent hazard of helicopter operations. To determine the recent incidence of rotor blade injuries in the U.S. Army, a review of accident records (1972-91) was conducted. Crash-related injuries were not included. During the study period, there were 24 blade strike injuries (12 involving the main rotor), 11 (46%) of which were fatal. Comparison with previous reports ...
